Hope

Haiti!

As most of you know Haiti has just had an enormous earthquake that has changed the lives of many people. All you need to know is that we can help! The Red Cross is collecting money, so that is a great place to donate to.  Our class is  working on doing the best we can to make a difference. When you think about what has happened… you feel powerless!

And I bet the people in Haiti want our help. As Rebekah said yesterday in class “If the earthquake had happened where you lived… wouldn’t you want people to help?” And I totally stand by that! Think. If you got someone half way across the world that was thinking about you, praying for you, sending money for your benefit…wouldn’t you want it? People you didn’t even know existed are now sending money to help you and your country. That’s amazing and it is all happening! You can be one of those people who can help save the lives of many. There is still Hope.

Everyone is trying to make a difference with telethons and fundraisers. This is going to stay here for a lot of time. It’s not quick as in a few months,  this is a long time shock that will affect people forever. It will always be stuck in their minds and it may never go away. With missing limbs it’s not something you can forget… it will live with them till the day they die.

Please help all the people in need!

Eric did not say that this poem was specifically about Haiti–but somehow it feels like could be:

Hope

I sit in the dark
Waiting for something that will never come

As I stare into coal-black darkness
I  see the shadows dancing ominously

They sneer and cackle at me viciously

I heard the eerie silence speak to me
Luring me deeper into the empty abyss
Where I finally see a spark of light
That lit up the whole world
And everything became clear—

I was staring at hope.

What gives you hope when you are feeling hopeless? When others are suffering, how should we respond?

  1. @ Ms. smith. It has been really hard for me for the last couple of weeks. I have really enjoyed blogging so it can writing out my feeling, it is way better for me to talk about it on here, than keeping it in side of me, thank you for the comment!

    Easton 🙂

    1. I can see things are getting a little better day by day, Easton. I am glad you have found support from your classmates and from your blogging community.

  2. Hi Ms. Smith. I thought over the comment you sent to me about blogging. I probably wouldn’t of shared my feelings if you hadn’t asked us to write about blogging, and I wouldn’t of shared it anyother way. To me this is a step because I usually stick to what teachers probably want to hear. I like having the freedom that you gave me. I do understand that you are giving me freedom but there seems to be something from holding back my feelings. If I am going to share my feelings I think I will do it off my blog or if possible use my art to share what I feel. I’m glad you like the part about freedom because thats what I was focusing on.

Thanks for letting me share what I think.

    1. Greyson, when it comes to feelings, you don’t have to share everything–or anything, really. Finding how and what to express is an important part of learning. Freedom sounds like a pretty straightforward idea, but it is nuanced (look that up).
I really do appreciate this conversation.

  3. Wow thats really sad,
Have you Lizzie or Eric ever experianced somthing terrible as this or just anything thsat has ever changed your life?

  6. Wow I loved your blog. It wants me want to send millions of dollars to haiti, but I am only in grade six so that can’t happen. Keep up the good work. My avatars name is Pomona so if you would like to check out my blog.

  7. That was beautiful. It made me feel like I wanted to cry, it really touched me. I am in grade 6 and even though most kids our age do not understand the concept of what is going on in Haiti right now I can certainly tell that you do understand and is thriving to make a difference.
By the way, I also have a blog, but I share it so make sure that it says it’s by Cleopatra.

  8. Wow I love your blog. That makes me want to give Haiti a million dollars, but I’m only in grade six. Well if you would like to visit my blogs my avatars name is Pomona.

  9. Yea it is good that you wrote about Haiti because the people that suffered of that should deserve to earn money so they can have something to eat and to drink. Great blogs keep writing great job.

  10. WOW! I really liked your blog. I made me realize that there is more people that need my help than I thought. At first I thought that Haiti was already getting enough help. But know I realize the one more person helping could really make a change.

  11. What happened to Haiti is really sad. If it happened to where i live i would want someone people to help me. Would you like help if it happened to where you live?

  12. I think it is great that you are wanting to help those in need. What happened in Haiti is horrible and those people need our help!

  13. Yes, Haiti was a very difficult and horrible situation!! But it is getting better but in evry situation it always gets worse before it gets better but this situation is healing!

  14. i think that was a great post. people just dont know what is happening. i’d help if i could. i just hope that haiti will be safe.

    1. Heyy Ariel it would be really hard to have relatives in Haiti during the earthquake. I hope your friends cousin is okay! :):)BYE

  15. I have tried to help the people who have been affected in Haiti. I think its great to help people in need. That earthquake was a devastator. It was a 8.5 I think. I learned about the earthquake shortly after it had happened. I have been the middle of earthquakes before, but nothing like that.

    P.S Great poem.

    1. Hi Spartacus,
Yes it is good to help people in need. In our school we did a bake sale to raise money for Haiti. It would also be scary in an earthquake, especially that big. I also think it would be good to help them because if one of us had an earthquake lots of people would try to help us.

  16. My avatar name is Iris. I liked your post because of the people you are thinking about, and hoe you are being help ful. I would really like to help Haiti. I really feel bad for them I wonder how I would feel if i where there. What would you do if you where there, and how would you help them?

    1. I like your avatar name because it’s unique. If I were there I would bring(loads and loads of) food, water, resources, seeds, farm tools and other comforting appliances. To help them I would try to comfort them: mentaly and physically, if I couldn’t get through to them or I wasn’t capable of the work I would try my best to get specialists who fully understand what they are doing. Thanks for the comment.

    1. @ Icarus162x, I will have a look at your blog I bet it is so cool! You said you feel bad for the Haiti, lots of people do, but so many people are helping out there right, now and lots of people donated lots of money, food, health care, and lots of thing to help then survive that horrible earthquake! So they are on there way to getting better and There house’s are getting rebuilt, So they will be alright. You can visit my blog at http://eastonh4.edublogs.org/
Ps I will check out your blog and comment I hope you enjoy blogging!
