Our year is coming to an end. Not old exactly, just complete. Full of satisfying memories and great learning.
One treasured memory of the year is the writing, composing, and making a video/slideshow of our new school song. With the help of our talented music teacher, Jenn Forsland, and local (Juno Award nominated!) musician, Helen Austin, we wrote a song that we leave as a legacy to our school. We are pretty proud of it–please give it a listen. But a warning: it is a bit of an earworm:

Dear 6th and 7th grade students, music teachers, and Ms. Smith,
I love, love, love your song! Believe me, you certainly do shine! If I could go back to school, I would go to Brooklyn Elementary. You are so lucky to be surrounded by so many talented and dedicated teachers and students. Plus, your school looks beautiful, too!
Do you have a special day each year when you bring bears to school? I imagine that is not an every day occurrence.

Hi Mrs. Donofrio,
Thank you so much for your kind words. We do feel fortunate to be able to work and learn together every day. This song makes it look like we just play all the time, and while play is learning, being focused and industrious is part of the mix…just not well captured in photos. Our school is beautiful, partly because of the setting but also because of our dedicated custodians and school district maintenance staff.
Bear Day happens once a year…when we changed buildings we changed mascots, and those mascots became part of the murals in the entrance to our school. I am always amazed at the size of the bears that appear. There are two stuffed bears that hang out at the office in case people have a bad day.

I remember recording this song, they did a pretty cool job on the video. While we were recording there were 6 or more classes you couldn’t even move without hurting someone. Good times

I just absolutely love that song! It really does represent our school in a good way. It shows we help others, encourage other kids to learn and many other wonderful things that happens at Brooklyn.
