The World is a Good Place

Although news reports might suggest the contrary, there is plenty of proof that the world is a good place, full of good people doing good things. Some people make life better for people who are facing cancer or poverty, others help the environment.

Take a look at what Mr. Carmichael, his students and their school have been doing to help Cops for Cancer and Tour du Rock. Like us, Mrs. Braidwood’s students have taken part in the Terry Fox Run. Read an excellent post about Terry’s life and commitment on the Ripple Effect. Division 1, our friends in Vancouver, are joining others who want to inspire and celebrate the youth movement for global change at We Day. On Ms. Clayton’s blog, you’ll find a remembrance of a boy who made a difference and won’t be forgotten.

We have “done good” here too. Recently we took part in the national Shoreline Clean-Up.

We worked in teams.

We kept a record of the garbage--look at all the cigarette butts!

A hard-working but happy team!

Garbage is gross!

Lots of garbage and recyclables

We found a lot of garbage and recyclables.

And we kept our smiles on for the Terry Fox run:

Sprinting to the finish!

I did it!

Yes!

Even after all that, we had enough energy to share our advice on how to make the world a better place. We turned our messages into a video.

Blogging friends, tell us about the good done by you and others. How are you, your classmates and community working to make the world a better place? Please let us know in a comment.

We’ll tweet about it!

  1. Hello Ms. Smith,
Boy, did we pick up a LOT of garbage. I remember Kenzie and I found that spot in the bushes with the ton of garbage.
    Bye for now!

  2. Hi Ms.Smith!
I had lots of fun at the shoreline cleanup picking up garbage! Its surprising how fun it is to make a difference. It is amazing how much garbage we can pick up together as a school.

  3. Hello Mrs.Smiths class,What a beautiful blog you guys have hear you all look like such a wonderful class. Trust me you are in for a good school year! I think it’s super cool how you guys are helping clean up our world and runing for terry fox. Have a super year you guys ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Our School in New Zealand is an Enviro School, so we have a school garden, recycle paper and recycle food waste. We’ve just started investigating the collection of rain water for use within our school for water for the gardens and other uses. It teaches the students the fact that they can help the environment from a relatively small stage (our school).
Mr Webb, Room 8, Melville Intermediate School, New Zealand.

    1. Hello Mr. Webb and all the Room 8 students! Sounds like we have a few things in common. We too compost and recycle paper, and once our schools merge, our garden should start growing. I think it is quite fabulous that might gather water. We have schools in our district that use solar panels for electrictiy. We are on the lookout for ways to reduce our power consumption. Keep up the excellent work!

    1. Hi Matt, it ‘s the little things we do that make such a big difference. Doing one shore line cleanup can save hundreds of animals and help protect their homes. We only have one earth so we have to protect it.

    2. Ya I agree completely with Jordan. One piece of garbage can kill more than one animal. I hope we can continue to make the world a better place.

  9. The video was terrific. I would like to share it as an example of great work, positive community-building, and just plain fun. Well done to all involved in its production.

  10. Hey I think you guys are great for doing the national shoreline clean up. I’ve been In Mrs. Braidwood’s class for a couple of months now and. We have already gone to We Day. It was life changing event. We are doing a food drive soon and some of us are doing Halloween for Hunger. To help people in poverty in our community are any of you doing Halloween for Hunger?

    1. Hi Colton,
What did you do at We Day? I once did a food drive and it was really fun. Have you ever done a food drive? I don’t think I am doing the Halloween for Hunger but I wish I was. Happy Halloween!
      Colton C.

  11. Hello, This is a student in Mrs. Braidwood’s grade 7 class. Nice job on cleaning up the beach. Our class also learned about Terry Fox. It was cool that he wanted to raise $1 for every Canadian citizen. Our school then did the terry fox run. I was wondering though, how long did it take you to clean all the garbage on the beach?

    1. Hi Matt,
Thanks for asking about the Shoreline Clean-up. We biked down to Point Holmes from our school around 9:00 and returned to school for lunch. I think we spent about 1.5 hours at the beach. The whole morning was a lot of fun.
Take care, and good luck with your blogging this year.

  12. What’s up? I’m a student in Mrs.Braidwood’s class division 1. Great job for cleaning up the beach’s. Those beach’s could use a cleaning. Our school also did the Terry Fox run and also raised money.

    1. The sky is up, Mike! (Little lame joke there, sorry.) Your school has a history of doing good in the world. Thank you for making a difference to people and the planet. Happy blogging!

  13. It is great Mrs. Smith that you are trying to make a difference in the world. It’s really the youth who stand out from others and forget about the people who say they can’t do it because they’re are young but its the youth who make the most difference.

    1. Hello Jadein,
It is great that Mrs.Smith is making a difference in the world. Mrs.Smith is great isn’t she. Did your class try Vegemite? Our class did. It was horrible it tasted like rotten soya sauce. I don’t even think that is possible.
      Please write back
      Mya

  14. Hi I’m Pamela I am in Mrs.Braidwoods class of grade sevens.I really like your class blog you guys had a lot of mixed feeling about the Terry Fox run.I had a lot of fun running my friends didn’t though ๐Ÿ™ because i ran in front of them all the time. What is your favorite thing about the Terry Fox run? ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Hi Mrs. Smith
Our class is making the world a better place by
doing the Halloween for Hunger campaign. That means instead of asking for candy when I’m Trick or Treating I ask for non perishable food items for the food bank. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Wow!
Kylie that is awesome. You are very caring and giving for doing that. You are TRULY the definition of making the world a better place.
      Thank you,
      From Mara

  16. Hello I’m a student from Mrs. Braidwood’s grade 7 class. Great job with the beach clean up. There sure were a lot of cigarette butts. Do you know how many were there exactly?

Our school did the Terry Fox Run too!

    1. Hi Kayla, I’m from Ms.Smith’s class. Thank for your comment on our clean up. I think we did a good job too!
I don’t know how many cigarettes we picked up exactly, but there was a LOT. I’m also glad you did the Terry Fox run as-well. I hope you had fun running!
